Custom Parts Coverage: How to Make Sure Your Build Is Actually Insured
Custom Parts and Equipment (CPE) coverage is the only way to protect your aftermarket Jeep investments. Here's how it works and how to set it up correctly.
What Is Custom Parts and Equipment Coverage?
Custom Parts and Equipment (CPE) coverage — sometimes called accessories coverage or aftermarket parts coverage — is an insurance endorsement that specifically covers modifications and aftermarket components added to your vehicle after it left the factory.
Without CPE coverage, your aftermarket parts are likely not covered at all under your standard auto policy. That $3,500 suspension lift kit? Not covered. The $1,200 Warn winch? Not covered. The $2,800 ARB steel bumper? Not covered. The $800 light bar? Not covered.
Standard auto insurance covers the factory vehicle up to its actual cash value. Everything else is your problem — unless you have CPE coverage.
How CPE Coverage Works
CPE coverage works in two main ways:
Blanket Coverage: You purchase a set dollar amount of CPE coverage — say $10,000 — and any aftermarket modification or accessory is covered up to that blanket limit. This is simpler to set up and works well for builds where no single item is extremely high-value.
Scheduled Coverage: Individual high-value items are specifically listed on the policy with their own agreed values. This approach provides more certainty about what specific items are covered and for how much.
For most Jeep owners with significant builds, a combination approach works best: schedule the major high-value components (winch, bumpers, lift kit) and use a blanket limit for smaller accessories.
What Jeep Modifications Qualify for CPE Coverage
Almost any aftermarket or dealer-installed modification qualifies:
- •Lift kits and suspension upgrades
- •Aftermarket bumpers (front and rear)
- •Winches and recovery equipment
- •Rock sliders and rocker protection
- •Skid plates and underbody armor
- •Aftermarket wheels and oversized tires
- •Light bars, pod lights, and auxiliary lighting
- •Roof racks and cargo systems
- •Snorkels and intake upgrades
- •Locking differentials
- •On-board air systems
- •Communication equipment (CB radio, ham radio, satellite comms)
- •Interior modifications and upgraded seating
- •Custom audio and electronics
- •Rooftop tents and overlanding equipment
The Documentation Problem
This is where most Jeep owners fall short: you need documentation to make CPE coverage work.
When you file a claim for a total loss or theft, the insurer needs to verify that your modifications actually existed and what they were worth. Without documentation:
- •The adjuster may dispute the value of your modifications
- •You may not be able to prove what parts were on the vehicle
- •You may be paid less than the actual value of your build
- •Description of the part (brand, model, specific component)
- •When it was installed (approximate date)
- •Who installed it (you or a shop)
- •Cost of the part
- •Cost of installation (if professional)
- •Photos showing the modification on the vehicle
Setting Your CPE Limit: Don't Underinsure
A common mistake is purchasing CPE coverage that's too low for the actual build. Here's a reality check on modification costs for a typical trail-built Wrangler:
- •4-inch suspension lift (budget): $1,500–$3,000
- •4-inch suspension lift (quality, long-arm): $4,000–$8,000
- •Aftermarket steel front bumper: $500–$2,500
- •Aftermarket steel rear bumper: $400–$1,800
- •Warn winch: $600–$1,800
- •Rock sliders: $400–$1,000
- •Skid plates (full belly): $800–$2,500
- •Aftermarket wheels (4): $600–$2,400
- •37-inch tires (5): $1,200–$2,500
- •Light bar: $200–$600
- •ARB locker (one): $800–$1,500
Set your CPE limit to cover your total modification investment — then add a buffer for appreciation on quality parts.
CPE Coverage and Installation Method
A common question: are parts I installed myself covered?
Yes, in most cases DIY-installed parts are covered the same as professionally installed parts — but documentation becomes even more important. Without an installer's invoice to establish value and prove the part was installed, you're relying entirely on your own records and photos.
If you're a serious DIY builder, maintain particularly detailed records: part purchase receipts, installation photos, and photos of the completed modification.
When to Update Your CPE Coverage
CPE coverage only covers what's listed or within the blanket limit at the time of the policy. Add a significant modification and forget to update your policy, and that new component may not be covered.
Always contact your insurer when you:
- •Install a new major component (lift, bumper, winch, locker)
- •Upgrade an existing component to something more valuable
- •Complete a significant build milestone that materially increases your rig's value
CPE Coverage vs. Agreed Value: What's the Difference?
These are complementary coverages, not alternatives:
CPE Coverage protects your aftermarket parts specifically. It adds the value of your modifications on top of the base vehicle coverage.
Agreed Value Coverage covers the total vehicle at a pre-agreed amount that reflects both the base vehicle value and the modification value. It eliminates the depreciation argument entirely.
For heavily modified builds, you want both: CPE to explicitly list and protect your aftermarket parts, and agreed value to ensure the total payout if the vehicle is totaled reflects your full investment.
Getting CPE Coverage for Your Jeep
Not all insurance companies offer robust CPE coverage for modified vehicles. Mainstream carriers often have low limits ($1,000–$5,000) or refuse to write heavily modified vehicles.
Jeep Insurance Agency works with specialist carriers that:
- •Offer CPE coverage with limits appropriate for serious builds
- •Understand the aftermarket Jeep market and part values
- •Have claims experience with modified vehicles
- •Won't cancel your policy for having a lifted or modified rig
